Is your sunscreen safe? Sunology looks at the debate

Warnings of the potential dangers of chemical sunscreens have been slowly increasing for several years. The major claims are that the active ingredients in many sunscreens potentially cause skin aging, the development of cancer, and are absorbed at toxic levels by the skin. Organizations such as the Environmental Working Group even have an annual Hall of Shame each spring for misleading/terrible sunscreen products.

In February, the UK’s Daily Mail reported that Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen said that she would not put suncreen–or in her words, “this poison”–on her skin. Consumers and media outlets scrambled to determine why she would say such a thing. Here’s our take on an article posted last week by StyleList: Sunscreen Dangerous? Experts Shed Light on the Controversy.

The most common active ingredient in these sunscreens—Oxybenzone—is associated with allergic reactions and potential hormone disruption. Scientists highly recommend against using it on children due to its ease of penetrating the skin. Another chemical found in common sunscreens is retinyl palmitate, a vitamin A compound that may actually increase the risk of developing skin cancer. These synthetic chemicals as well as such as avobenzone, benzophenone, ethylhexyl p-methoxycinnimate, 2-ethylhexyl salicylate, homosalate and octyl methoxycinnamate often are found to be absorbed into the bloodstream at high levels.

According in the USNews and Huffington Post Green, “mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide/titanium dioxide) provide far superior UVA protection than non-mineral sunscreens, they are more highly recommended by the EWG, though they only constitute 20% of the sunscreen products available” (HuffPo, 2010).

Sunology Sunblock is made from ingredients derived from naturally-occurring minerals such as Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide that safely block and scatter the sun’s rays without any synthetic preservatives or any of the other chemicals listed above.

From the beginning, our business model has been to be the healthy alternative to the other man-made, synthetic chemicals and preservatives presently dominating the sunblock sections of drug and grocery stores. Our founder, Richard Doermer, created Sunology after surviving skin cancer. His belief—and ours—is to help others live healthy, active lives by providing worry-free protection for their skin. The future of safe, effective care for your skin is in Sunology.

For a very long time I have been fearful of sun blocks and what chemicals can do to me. I have used them also out of fear of skin cancer. Your product is exactly what I am looking for and I will be purchasing it. Thanks!!!!!!
